In a certain village lived a farmer and his only son. The son was a thief who always went about stealing from people’s homes. He continued this bad lifestyle till the day his cup got filled. He stole heavy sum of money from the richest man in their village, but that day he didn’t escape successfully as he used to. The rich man contacted the police immediately when he found out that his money was missing and the police started investigating, and finally they found out that the boy stole the money so they sent him to prison.
After some months, it was time for farming and the farmer was already old and weak and couldn’t dig the ground any more, so the old farmer wrote this letter to his son in prison. “Son, this year I will not plant cassava and yam because I can’t dig the field, I know if you were here you would have helped me”. The son was really touched by his father’s letter so he thought of a plan, and replied his father “Dad, don’t even think of digging the field because that’s where I buried the money I stole”.
On reading this letter, the policeman went early in the morning and dug the whole field in search of the money but nothing was found. The next day the son wrote his father again “Dad, you can now plant your cassava and yam. This is the best I can do from here.”
Dad replied “My son, you are too powerful indeed, even in prison you still command policemen to work for me. I was so surprised to see the policeman and his team holding hoes and shovels, digging my farm. Next time I will write to you when I want to harvest.

C 5. A 6. B 7. A
由文章第一段“The rich man contacted the police immediately when he found out that his money was missing and the police started investigating, and finally they found out that the boy stole the money so they sent him to prison.(这位富翁发现自己的钱不见了，立即联系了警方，警方开始调查，最后他们发现男孩偷了钱，于是把他送进了监狱)”可知，男孩最后被送进监狱了。
通读文章，结合倒数第二段“On reading this letter, the policeman went early in the morning and dug the whole field in search of the money but nothing was found. The next day the son wrote his father again “Dad, you can now plant your cassava and yam. This is the best I can do from here. ”(读到这封信后，警察一大早就去了，把整个田地都挖了一遍，寻找那笔钱，但什么也没找到。第二天，儿子再次写信给父亲：“爸爸，你现在可以种木薯和山药了。这是我在这里能做的最好的事。”)”可知，文中讲述男孩想帮他的父亲锄地，然而在监狱里做不到，于是想了一个办法，让警察帮忙锄地。A项“Think outside the box.(跳出思维定式)”符合文意。故选A项。
由文章第三段“On reading this letter, the policeman went early in the morning and dug the whole field in search of the money but nothing was found.(读到这封信后，警察一大早就去了，把整个田地都挖了一遍，寻找那笔钱，但什么也没找到)”可知，警察相信男孩信的内容然后去找了。故选B项。

Leaf peeping, the practice of traveling to watch nature display the fall colors, is a beloved annual activity, especially in New England. Typically, by the end of September, leaves take on warmer colors throughout the U.S. But this year, many areas haven’t even shaken off the green shades of summer. In Maine, forest rangers reported less than 70% color change and modest leaf drop.
It’s commonly believed that trees, like people, must prepare for winter. When fall arrives, and day length and temperature drop, trees respond by ending green substance production and absorbing remaining nutrients, causing leaves to lose the original color. Greens give way to yellows, reds and oranges that make for dramatic autumn displays.
Warm fall temperatures can make the fall colors appear later. Worse, dry summers can cause leaves to miss the fall color turn altogether. Delay of the start of the fall colors, which has been moving later into the fall, could continue. “My observations in the last decade have had more years that were later than what we consider historical averages. It can be a trend as the planet warms,” said the expert Jim Salge.
It’s not just the plants that suffer. “Turning leaves offer an irresistible mass of color — which, by estimate, brings in as much as billions of dollars a year in tourism in New England,” said Andy Finton, a forest ecologist. That’s another good reason to focus on preserving forests. Leaf peeping can stay part of the area’s feature if forests are given enough protection. “If we can keep them unharmed, they’ll provide things we’ve depended on, as well as fall inspiration,” said Finton.
8. What is special about the leaves in Maine this year?
A. They take on warm colors. B. They drop earlier than normal.
C. They stay green longer. D. They totally miss the fall color turn.
9. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Ways of trees surviving winter. B. Explanation of leaves changing color.
C. Functions of the green substance. D. Effect of climate change on fall leaves.
10. What is the “trend” according to Jim Salge in paragraph 3?
A. The earth gets drier. B. The temperature gets higher.
C. The earth gets warmer. D. The leaves delay color change.
11. What’s the purpose of this text?
A. To introduce leaf peeping. B. To report the right time for leaf peeping.
C. To call on people to admire fall leaves. D. To warn people to take care of forests.
C 9. B 10. D 11. D
根据第一段“Typically, by the end of September, leaves take on warmer colors throughout the U.S. But this year, many areas haven’t even shaken off the green shades of summer. In Maine, forest rangers reported less than 70% color change and modest leaf drop.(通常，到9月底，美国各地的树叶都会呈现出暖色调。但今年，许多地区甚至还没有摆脱夏天的绿色阴影。在缅因州，护林员报告说只有不到70%的颜色变化和少量的落叶)”可知，今年缅因州的树叶保持绿色的时间较长。故选C。
主旨大意题。根据第二段“It’s commonly believed that trees, like people, must prepare for winter. When fall arrives, and day length and temperature drop, trees respond by ending green substance production and absorbing remaining nutrients, causing leaves to lose the original color. Greens give way to yellows, reds and oranges that make for dramatic autumn displays.(人们普遍认为树和人一样，必须为冬天做准备。当秋天到来，白天长度和温度下降时，树木的反应是停止产生绿色物质，吸收剩余的营养物质，导致树叶失去原来的颜色。绿色让位于黄色、红色和橙色，它们构成了引人注目的秋季展示)”可知，第二段主要讲树叶颜色变化的原因。故选B。
词句猜测题。根据第三段中“Delay of the start of the fall colors, which has been moving later into the fall, could continue. “My observations in the last decade have had more years that were later than what we consider historical averages. It can be a trend as the planet warms,” said the expert Jim Salge.(秋色开始推迟的时间可能会继续。
根据最后一段中“Leaf peeping can stay part of the area’s feature if forests are given enough protection. “If we can keep them unharmed, they’ll provide things we’ve depended on, as well as fall inspiration,” said Finton.(如果森林得到足够的保护，赏枫叶可以成为该地区的特色之一。Finton说：“如果我们能让它们毫发无损，它们将提供我们赖以生存的东西，以及秋天的灵感。”)”结合本文讲述的是，美国很多地区的树叶在秋季依然保持着绿色，给树木本身和经济带来了不利的影响。文章探讨了这一现象的原因，即气候变化导致树叶变色延迟。由此可知，作者的写作目的在于引发读者对这一问题的关注，呼吁人们应对气候变化，保护森林。故选D。
Jason, a straight-A student from the University of Pennsylvania, uses the term “pseudo-working” to describe how many of us study. The pseudo-worker looks and feels like someone who is working hard- he or she spends a long time in the library and is not afraid to push on late into the night——but, because of a lack of focus and concentration, he or she doesn’t actually accomplish much.
This phenomenon can be seen on most college campuses. For example, at Dartmouth there was a section of the main library that was open twenty-four hours a day, and the students I used to see there late at night crowded in groups, drinking coffee, were definitely pseudo-working. The roommate who flips through (快速翻转) her chemistry notes on the couch while watching TV is pseudo-working.
By placing themselves in distracting environments and insisting on working long hours, these students are damaging their brain’s ability to think clearly and efficiently accomplish the task at hand. In the end they get half the results with twice the effort.
The bigger problem here is that most students don’t even realize that they’re pseudo-working. To them pseudo-working is work- it’s how they’ve always done it, and it’s how all of their friends do it. It never crosses their mind that there might be a better way. Straight-A students, on the other hand, know all about pseudo-working. They fear it. It not only wastes time, but it’s also mentally tiring.
In fact, the most important skill in becoming a straight-A student is the ability to get work done quickly and with a minimum of wasted effort. Some cognitive (认知) science research concludes that about fifty minutes is the optimal learning period to maximize the material integrated per time unit. So how do these students achieve this goal? To understand their secret to success, consider the following simple formula (公式): work accomplished = time spent × intensity of focus.
Pseudo-working features a very low intensity of focus. Therefore, to accomplish something by pseudo-working, you need to spend a lot of time. The straight-A approach on the other hand, increases intensity in order to use less time.
12. Which of the following phenomenon is pseudo-working?
A. Tom is busy taking notes while attending a lecture.
B. Mike is sitting at a schoolroom in preparation for a final exam quietly.
C. Jack spends a long time in the library on his essay while listening to music.
D. Alice and Sara are sitting on the couch reading their favorite books.
13. Compared with straight-A students, the major problem of most students is that ________.
A. they want to spend more time on study
B. they are eager to follow their friends’ way
C. they have got used to their study approach
D. they are unaware of their pseudo-working
14. What does the underlined word “optimal” mean in paragraph 5?
A. Last B. Best C. Least D. Worst
15. What does the author want to stress by mentioning the formula?
A. Concentration plays a key role in study.
B. The length of time on study counts.
C. Getting work done quickly means everything.
D. Effective study approach is very important.
C 13. D 14. B 15. A
根据文章第二段“This phenomenon can be seen on most college campuses. For example, at Dartmouth there was a section of the main library that was open twenty-four hours a day, and the students I used to see there late at night crowded in groups, drinking coffee, were definitely pseudo-working. The roommate who flips through her chemistry notes on the couch while watching TV is pseudo-working. (这种现象在大多数大学校园中都可以看到。例如，在达特茅斯，主图书馆有一个部分是 24 小时开放的，我以前在深夜看到的学生成群结队地喝咖啡，绝对是伪工作。一边看电视一边在沙发上翻阅她的化学笔记的室友是伪工作。)”可知，以上的现象都是“伪工作”。C项“Jack spends a long time in the library on his essay while listening to music. (杰克一边听音乐一边在图书馆里写论文很长时间。)”与以上例子相似，都是将自己置于分散注意力的环境中并坚持长时间工作，故选C项。
细节理解题。根据文章第四段“The bigger problem here is that most students don’t even realize that they’re pseudo-working. To them pseudo-working is work—it’s how they’ve always done it, and it’s how all of their friends do it. It never crosses their mind that there might be a better way. Straight-A students, on the other hand, know all about pseudo-working.”(这里更大的问题是大多数学生甚至没有意识到他们是在伪工作。 D项“they are unaware of their pseudo-working(他们没有意识到他们的伪工作)”与原文信息相符。
根据文章第五段“In fact, the most important skill in becoming a straight-A student is the ability to get work done quickly and with a minimum of wasted effort. (事实上，成为一名全优学生最重要的技能是能够快速完成工作并尽量减少浪费的精力。)”可知，成为全优学生的最重要技能是快速完成工作，浪费时间最少。根据划线词前面的内容“Some cognitive (认知) science research concludes that about fifty minutes (一些认知科学研究得出结论，大约50分钟……)”
根据文章第五段“So how do these students achieve this goal? To understand their secret to success, consider the following simple formula: work accomplished=time spent × intensity of focus(那么这些学生是如何实现这一目标的呢?要了解他们成功的秘诀，可以考虑以下简单的公式：完成的工作=花费的时间×专注的强度)”以及最后一段“Pseudo-working features a very low intensity of focus. Therefore, to accomplish something by pseudo-working, you need to spend a lot of time. The straight-A approach on the other hand, increases intensity in order to use less time. (“伪工作”的特点是聚焦强度很低。因此，要通过伪工作来完成某件事，您需要花费大量时间。另一方面，全A（A等生）的方法会增加聚焦强度以减少时间。)”可知，作者并不支持“伪工作”，所以作者更加支持通过减少时间增加专注强度的方法，故推测作者列出公式是为了强调“专注强度”的重要性。A项“Concentration plays a key role in study. (专注在学习中起着关键作用。)”符合推断。故选A。
The most relaxing colors are generally believed to be cool shades such as green and blue. ____16____ So we can often see these colors in hospitals, test centers, and television stations, where people may want some help to ease their nerves and bad emotions.
Home designers note that people often describe rooms painted blue and green as relaxing and comfortable. As a result, architects often use colors from the cool part of the color circle in bedrooms and bathrooms. ____17____
Driving down a highway. you’ll notice that some signs consist of white letters on a dark green background. ____18____ Another place where we see green used is in the “green room” of theaters or television studios because nervous performers are quieted by the color. This is also the reason why doctors wear green clothes in the operating room. And prison cells often paint their walls green for the same effect.
____19____ Our eyes sense color using tiny sensors sensitive to the red light, the green light or the blue light. However, generally they are the most sensitive to the green light. Researchers think that this sensitivity to green objects might affect hormonal production that in turn influences the mood. What’s more, recent studies have shown that when a person looks at the green colored paper or is placed in a green room, their heart rate drops, blood pressure lowers, and muscles relax. ____20____ So next time you’re feeling nervous or upset, please try to focus your eyes on something green instead of red.
A. There was research into colors in ancient times.
B. In contrast, hot colors cause these to rise.
C. Different colors can cause different psychological reactions.
D. Engineers determine such signs won’t get people’s eyes tired.
E. And painters often use blues and greens on walls and ceilings.
F. Scientists have found some evidence for the magic power of green.
G. It is agreed that the two can make us feel calm, balanced and less emotional.
G 17. E 18. D 19. F 20. B
上文“The most relaxing colors are generally believed to be cool shades such as green and blue.”提到了最令人放松的两种颜色：蓝色和绿色；而下文“So we can often see these colors in hospitals, test centers, and television stations, where people may want some help to ease their nerves and bad emotions.” G项“It is agreed that the two can make us feel calm, balanced and less emotional.(人们一致认为，这两者可以让我们感到平静、平衡、不那么情绪化。)”中的“the two”与上文蓝色和绿色两种颜色对应，“make us feel calm, balanced and less emotional”则对应下文的“help to ease their nerves and bad emotions”。故选G项。
上文“Home designers note that people often describe rooms painted blue and green as relaxing and comfortable. As a result, architects often use colors from the cool part of the color circle in bedrooms and bathrooms. As a result, architects often use colors from the cool part of the color circle in bedrooms and bathrooms.” E项“And painters often use blues and greens on walls and ceilings.(油漆工也经常在墙壁和天花板上使用蓝色和绿色。)”中的“walls and ceilings”恰好与上文中的“bedrooms and bathrooms”对应。故选E项。
上文“Driving down a highway. you’ll notice that some signs consist of white letters on a dark green background.”提到了高速路上的一些标志的背景底色也是暗绿色的；下文“Another place where we see green used is in the “green room” of theaters or television studios because nervous performers are quieted by the color.” D项“Engineers determine such signs won’t get people’s eyes tired.(工程师们认为这样的标志不会让人们的眼睛感到疲劳。)”中的“such signs won’t get people’s eyes tired”恰好与上文的“some signs consist of white letters on a dark green background”相对应。
下文“Our eyes sense color using tiny sensors sensitive to the red light, the green light or the blue light. However, generally they are the most sensitive to the green light. Researchers think that this sensitivity to green objects might affect hormonal production that in turn influences the mood.” F项“Scientists have found some evidence for the magic power of green.(科学家们已经发现了绿色魔力的一些证据。)”
上文“What’s more, recent studies have shown that when a person looks at the green colored paper or is placed in a green room, their heart rate drops, blood pressure lowers, and muscles relax.” 而下文“So next time you’re feeling nervous or upset, please try to focus your eyes on something green instead of red.” B项“In contrast, hot colors cause these to rise.(相比之下，火热的颜色使这些上升。)”

For a long time, I had been looking for a piano of my own to practise on. There was a piano shop on the street along which I walked every day to school. Whenever I passed the shop, I would stop, looking at the beautiful piano standing in the comer of the shop window. How I had been dreaming, day and night to possess a piano like that!
Unfortunately, my father was just a clerk. Times were tough during the Depression, and there were five mouths to feed, besides buying coal and wood for the stove. In order to save money, even on cold winter days, my father would walk the seven miles every day to get to work. No he could never afford to buy me an expensive piano. Though he knew I wanted to play that piano so much» buying it was an extravagance (奢侈品) well beyond our family’s income.
One day after school, I went as usual to the shop window to look at the piano. However, to my surprise and disappointment, the piano had gone. I should not have been surprised as others had the right to buy it, if they could afford to. Tears filled my eyes when I thought of not being able to sec that piano any more.
Disappointed, helpless and sad, I wandered aimlessly up and down the street. After about an hour. I returned home. I had just entered into our house, when I heard my mother calling me. I brushed away my tears and followed the sound of her voice into the dining-room.
I could not believe my eyes.

Regardless of the bad weather, my father had gone to work every day to make money. I cold not imagine how much effort he had made!
